IDEAL IT Mentoring Program

IDEAL IT is a CIO Council-sponsored program that promotes and advances the Stanford Presidential IDEAL initiative within the IT Community at Stanford. IDEAL stands for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access in a Learning Community, and is a cornerstone of Stanford’s diversity initiatives.

The Year Up Internship Program is a partnership between Stanford University and Year Up, an organization that works with motivated young adults from underprivileged and economically disadvantaged communities to provide technology skills training and internship opportunities.

This Mentorship Program is a partnership between IDEAL IT and the Year Up Internship Program in order to accomplish IDEAL IT’s objectives of addressing the gender and diversity gap in technology. Our goal is a Mentorship Program that promotes and supports mutually-beneficial learning relationships between the mentor, who is a member of Stanford IDEAL IT, and the mentee, who is an intern from the Year Up Internship Program.

Participating in the Mentoring Program offers benefits to both the person being mentored (mentee) and the mentor. Here are just a few of those benefits:

  • Expand exposure to different functions in the Stanford community.
  • Learn diverse skills that can help advance your career.
  • Gain insights about situations, problem-solving, and interpersonal relationships from another point of view.

  • Access to resources across the university.
  • Practice the soft skills of encouragement, motivation, and leadership that can help you as you engage with your mentee.
  • Find your assumptions challenged and your way of thinking expanded in dialogue with your mentee.
  • Recognize that your experience and expertise are valuable to others.

Mentor and mentee relationships begin in the structure of the program but often last for years beyond the program dates.

IDEAL IT may be involved in the Year Up Internship Program in the following ways:

  1. Individual IDEAL IT members can be paired with one intern (or more, depending on how many mentors and interns apply). Mentors and mentees meet once a month for one hour. The hour should be scheduled inside the 36 hours when the interns work at Stanford, or over lunchtime.

  2. IDEAL IT invites interns to attend meetings, such as WIT Connect, POC-IT,  social or training events. Interns are welcome to join the meetings with supervisors’ permission.

  3. IDEAL IT may organize special events for Year Up interns, such as a panel discussion or a campus tour.

  4. Due to the limitation of transportation, it is better to meet with interns on the main campus, SRWC, or on Zoom.

The current cohort runs from September 2021 - January 2022. Below are key dates, deadlines, and time commitments:

  • September 9, 2021 | Mentoring Program Kickoff Meeting
  • November 16, 2021 | Mid-Point Check In
  • January 2022 | Closing Celebration/Graduation

Mentor-Mentee Pairing

The IDEAL IT Mentoring committee will match mentors, who are members of the WIT and POC-IT community, with mentees, who are interns from the July 2022 Year Up Internship Program cohort. The following criteria will be considered in the pairings:

  1. Location

  2. Outside intern’s immediate host groups

  3. Area/topics of interest

  4. Overall compatibility
