If you are a fan of Snakemake for running your computational workflows, we have exciting news! I’ve just finished the Google Life Sciences executor, meaning that you can use Google Compute paired with Storage for your Snakemake runs. See the link at the bottom for the announcement and link to the tutorial.

This was also a collaboration that I pursued that ultimately took on the order of 9 months to set up, which was months longer than the actual work. I want to thank my supervisor Ruth for her endurance along with our legal and billing teams. Collaboration with industry has its challenges, but there is a lot of potential gain both to provide software for Stanford users and to bring in funding for our group. We need to have easier, and attractive avenues for Stanford research software engineers to pursue this kind of collaboration to do work on behalf of Stanford researchers. With this empowerment, Stanford can have a more prominent role in funded projects to develop open source software.
