2023 Campus IT Plan Update: Aligning Strategies and Collaboration Opportunities

The 2023 Campus IT Plan continues to demonstrate Stanford’s commitment to prioritize and align its technology efforts across 10 strategic areas

Historically, the Campus IT Plan has been updated annually. This year, at the CIO Council’s recommendation, we are piloting a mid-year update. Eleven campus units provided updates to their current plans and more will be added in early November. You can view the most recent updates and highlights at the Campus IT Plan website

Mid-year updates highlight IT developments on campus

Here are some highlights from mid-year updates to the current plan:

  • Tain Barzso, the new director of the Dean of Research IT Strategy & Services team, added a new plan for the Vice Provost and Dean of Research. This includes community building and bringing together unit IT professionals as a more cohesive team with the goal of sharing technology & support models.
  • In partnership with UIT and Microsoft, the Graduate School of Business (GSB) Digital Solutions Group is exploring how they might deploy a GSB ChatGPT instance on Azure. The GSB is also implementing ChatGPT/Large Language Model as a transformative tool to enhance the educational, research, and operational aspects of the school.
  • In partnership with UIT’s Endpoint Engineering & Development team, the Office of the Vice President for the Arts launched a new Public Art feature on the Stanford Mobile app. Stanford community members and visitors can access self-guided tours and information about public and outdoor artwork across campus.
  • UIT has embarked upon a new initiative to build a “data lake,” a modern data architecture in the cloud that provides clean, reliable, secure and uniform data. The current data warehouse will extract and transform data from the lake as cloud application data moves. A pilot project for Student and Academic Services and the University Registrar focused on curriculum management, class scheduling, and degree audit data is currently underway.
  • The Coalition of Student Technology Support teams launched the new Tech Resources & Support site for students. The Stanford IT community heard loud and clear that the student technology support experience could be better. In response to this feedback, this website was created as a central place to get information and help with technology at Stanford. UIT and Learning Technology & Spaces are working together to align internal operations, including call and ticket handoffs, creating cohesive support content, and much more.
  • The Google Workspace Optimization project is well into the discovery phase. The project team, led by UIT and the University Libraries, is working on a broader storage strategy to phase out the unlimited and free storage allocation previously available to schools and universities that use Google Drive. The team is currently focused on gaining a deeper understanding of existing usage, and weighing the potential impact of a reduction effort to faculty.
