Is Your Security Accessible? Is Your Accessibility Secure?

In digital products, security and accessibility are often treated as separate — even conflicting — goals: one group builds walls to keep people out, another builds ramps to let people in. But the best-protected systems are usually the ones people can actually use.

This session dives into the intersection of cybersecurity and digital accessibility. You’ll see how inclusive design strengthens protection and how security controls that ignore diverse needs can create barriers and risky workarounds—like users sharing passwords just to gain access. We’ll dispel common myths, show what happens when either discipline is neglected, and outline a human-centered approach that lowers organizational risk while giving people appropriate access.

In this session, you will learn:

  • Why making security features usable is itself a security control.

  • How overly complex password rules can harm people with cognitive disabilities and don’t necessarily improve real-world security.

  • That automated accessibility tools detect only about 40% of issues, so human review and training are essential for both security and accessibility.

  • Practical, proactive techniques to create accessible content from the start (for example, in slide decks and documents) and build a culture of inclusion.
