It’s time to spread the word in your schools and units to encourage the deletion of old, unused Mailman email mailing lists and their archives.
Removing unnecessary mailing lists
There are more than 60,000 lists in Mailman Mailing List service, and an estimated 60% haven’t been used in many months or even years. We incur storage costs to maintain these lists and the archives. In a time of financial constraints, eliminating lists that are no longer needed is something we can all do.
University IT has begun communicating with the Stanford community about this effort, and more communications are planned.
- An article on how to delete inactive Mailman lists was recently published. This article let the community know that we would follow up with targeted communications.
- We’ll email faculty, students, and staff who own or administer lists that appear inactive asking them to review lists and delete any that are no longer needed.
- We’ve published new, step-by-step published instructions on how to delete an unneeded Mailman mailing list.
How you can help
We need our IT colleagues to help. Spread the word in your schools and units to encourage people to review their Mailman lists and delete those they no longer need.
