Empowering Tomorrow's Talent: Stanford IT Community Welcomes 16th Year Up Cohort!

Marking its eighth consecutive year, the Year Up United Internship Program and the Stanford IT community are hosting Year Up interns, providing them with first-hand experience in the workforce. In July, we welcomed nine new interns!

Year Up United

Year Up United (YUU) helps young professionals build both technical skills and real-world experience they need to start meaningful careers. Through structured programs that combine hands-on training with internships at organizations like Stanford,  participants get a taste of the working world.

At Stanford, YUU interns benefit from mentorship, career coaching, and the chance to be part of a dynamic workplace culture. By the end of the internship, they're ready to take the next step,  whether that is starting their career, continuing their education, or making an impact in the Bay Area and beyond!

“This smaller cohort brings incredible energy and curiosity,” says Hope Johnson, Year Up Partnership Lead. “We’re connecting them with mentors, helping them explore career paths, while building skills that will support their long-term success.”

We have four returning sponsoring organizations:

  • Land, Buildings & Real Estate
  • Stanford University Libraries
  • Learning Technologies & Spaces
  • University IT

“In partnership with the CIO Council, the Year Up United internship program provides a unique opportunity to tap the breadth of amazing young talent that is reflective of our broader Bay Area community,” said Steve Gallagher, Chief Information Officer and executive sponsor for the Stanford Year Up Internship program. “I’m delighted to see this program continue to grow and prosper across Stanford.”

Intern Spotlight

We are excited to welcome this year's cohort — and the feelings are mutual! Hear what some of our interns have to say about joining the Stanford community.

Maryam Noor Hussain

It is an absolute honor to be working at Stanford University. I am part of the Vice Provost of Student Affairs team. The work is very hands-on and exciting.  I am never one to back down from a challenge, so this team very much speaks to my soul. My team is the only in-person tech support for students, where they can come to us for troubleshooting their problems. The relief on a student's face when they realize they haven't lost all their work is worth it. My team focuses on serving approximately 1,500 students and resident faculty staff who live on campus. I am super proud to be working amongst such helpful, collaborative, and welcoming people. I'm super grateful to Year Up United for providing me with this great opportunity.

Jesus “Chuy” Muñiz-Alvarez

I’m an IT intern with the Mobile Device department at Stanford University. Coming from a Cognitive Science background, I’m especially interested in the intersection of technology and human behavior and how the tools we use shape our experiences and interactions.

I’m excited to gain hands-on experience, learn how to troubleshoot real-world tech issues, and better understand how large-scale IT operations support the everyday needs of the university and its hospitals. Being part of the UIT Mobile team has already been an incredible opportunity, and I’m super grateful to be learning from such a knowledgeable and supportive group. I’m looking forward to continuing to grow both technically and professionally throughout this internship.
