Year Up is a national workforce development organization that seeks to close the “Opportunity Divide.” It provides motivated young adults who lack opportunities with the skills, experience, and support to empower them to reach their potential through professional careers and higher education.

The IT Community welcomed its second cohort of Year Up interns, who gathered with their managers, Stanford IT leadership, and Year Up leadership at a luncheon on September 24.

This new cohort was preceded by a successful pilot of the Year Up Internship Program, which ran from January to July this year. During that time, the IT Community established a partnership with Year Up while hosting the first cohort of interns who worked with teams in University IT (UIT) and the School of Medicine (SoM).

“We couldn't be more grateful for Stanford’s partnership, and for what you’ve done in a short amount of time,” said Vic Espino, Director of Corporate Engagement for Year Up. “If an organization takes one or two interns they are doing us a favor; if they take five, ten, or more, it’s a true partnership — and that is exactly what this has become.”

Expanding the program

The second cohort brings eight new interns to Stanford, doubling the number of interns in cohort one. The plan is to increase that number to 20 when the third cohort starts in January 2020.

The second cohort includes:

  • Dana Guevarra, Data Analytics Intern, Research Computing
  • Brandol Herrera, Technical Support Technician, SOM IRT Customer Success
  • Benny Chiu, Desktop/AV Technician, UIT End-User Experience
  • Melissa Garcia, Technical Support Technician, UIT Service Desk
  • Deniel Dela Pasion, Technical Support Technician, UIT Service Desk
  • Nathaly Luna-Acosta, Quality Assurance Analyst , UIT Service Management
  • Julia Guerrero, Laptop Support Technician, VPTL Learning Technologies and Spaces
  • Emily Rangel, Laptop Support Technician, VPTL Learning Technologies and Spaces

Prior to starting their internships at Stanford, these students completed six months of training at the Year Up San Jose campus in areas such as help desk/desktop support, cyber security, project management, data analytics, and quality assurance. They also learned critical soft skills like business communication, time management, and public speaking.

During the luncheon, Stanford CIO Steve Gallagher welcomed the interns to Stanford and expressed great enthusiasm to have them join the IT Community.

“Being in the heart of Silicon Valley, Stanford has a responsibility to partner with folks from the community,” he said. “And, we also want to take advantage of the skills and energy that you bring to us. It’s hard to find good talent in this job market, so we are very lucky to have you here. It’s a win-win for all of us.”
