Jon Russell to become SLAC CIO

On July 20, Jon Russell will step into his new role as CIO of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.

Jon joined Stanford and University IT in 2014 as the director of the Service Desk. He became a key leader in enhancing UIT client services using data-driven strategies. Jon advanced to senior director of the UIT Service Desk and Operations Center and has been a prominent leader in many UIT initiatives, including:

  • redesigning Stanford’s incident management and major incident processes as part of the ServiceNow implementation
  • introducing 24x7 support, chat-based assistance, and machine learning aided incident routing to our Service Desk
  • leading the IDEAL IT Year Up Program, a CIO Council-sponsored Stanford IT-wide initiative designed to help diversify IT recruiting by providing internship opportunities at Stanford for young adults from underserved communities
  • serving as Resource Process Owner for the implementation of UIT Project Portfolio Management (PPM), as well as a member of the PPM governance committee, steering committee, and working group
  • directing UIT needs analysis, evaluation, and implementation of a cloud-based Artificial Intelligence Operations capability for enterprise monitoring that improves the capability to diagnose and prevent service interruptions
  • overseeing the development of an interactive dashboard that tracked enterprise Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Incident, Request, Problem and Knowledge Management processes

Prior to joining Stanford in 2014, Jon served as the Deputy Chief of Staff and CIO at the Defense Language Institute and as the Director of Academic Systems at the Naval Postgraduate School. Jon spent his early career on the east coast in the Financial Industry at Investors Bank & Trust and Wachovia Bank. He holds a BA from Wake Forest University and an MBA from Norwich University.
