Legacy Apps Retire; SDR Is the Go-To Tool for Device Compliance and Network Registration

Now, there’s no need to juggle multiple downloads to ensure a device is compliant.

The Stanford Device Registration (SDR) app was launched last fall to simplify device compliance at Stanford. This modern tool integrates the functionality of Stanford Whole Disk Encryption (SWDE), Device Enrollment, Stanford Network Registration Tool (SNRT), Very Lightweight Reporting Engine (VLRE) and Compliance Checker into a single user-friendly interface.

Next steps

  • During the Stanford Network Self-Registration (SNSR) workflow for new computers connecting to the campus network, you will now see SDR instead of SNRT.
  • The legacy stand-alone apps that SDR replaces (SWDE, Device Enrollment, and SNRT) will be retired in the coming weeks.
  • During the Stanford-purchased macOS device initial setup or restore, SDR will automatically launch after proceeding through Setup Assistant.
  • On a related note, the Jamf enrollment application will be sunsetted. Instead, you can enroll a device in Jamf by following the instructions for SDR for macOS or Jamf macOS web enrollment

A fresh, streamlined approach

By tailoring the process based on individual affiliations and data access requirements, SDR ensures devices are set up with precise protection levels for designated roles — all with the fewest steps possible. During encryption, SDR also offers the option to install VLRE (Very Lightweight Reporting Engine).

More ways to enhance the user experience

  • Network registration: As a tool in the network registration workflow, SDR will evolve to include a new “Register Anywhere” feature. This will enable a device to be registered for the campus network from anywhere — instead of only from an on-campus, Stanford wireless-enabled location.
Note: Devices subject to Stanford’s computer security mandate must be compliant to have full access to the Stanford network. If using a device that doesn’t meet Stanford's computer security mandate,  the Stanford Guest/Visitor network, which has limited bandwidth and duration on the network, is available.
  • Coming soon: SDR for Linux.
