Reports of macOS Connectivity Issues

We’re aware of an increasing number of reports of Macs experiencing connectivity issues, including a loss of connectivity, for both wired and wireless connections. An exclamation mark “!” appears on the Wi-Fi signal indicator, indicating an error in network communication. We've identified the technical challenges and a solution.

The problem is related to the Cisco AnyConnect Socket Filter application. While we do not need the Cisco Socket Filter component for VPN access at Stanford, it’s installed by default in the Cisco VPN package. Our testing shows removing this component resolves the connectivity issues. If anyone is currently experiencing this connectivity issue, we recommend that you follow the steps below to delete the Cisco AnyConnect Filter app.

How to delete the Cisco AnyConnect Socket Filter app

  1. Open Finder and navigate to Applications > Cisco.
  2. Delete or drag the Cisco AnyConnect Socket Filter app to the trash.
  3. When prompted to delete system extensions, click Continue.
  4. When prompted to authenticate, enter your computer password and click OK.
  5. Reboot the computer.
