Dear Colleagues:
It is with mixed emotions that we write to announce Ruth Marinshaw will be leaving Stanford to join Yale University as Executive Director for Research Computing Technologies. In this new role, Ruth will report jointly to Yale’s Vice Provost for Research and Vice President for Information Technology and Campus Services.
Ruth is a superb leader with more than 25 years of experience in supporting, managing and leading technology teams and programs in higher ed. Her team is focused on ensuring that campus researchers have access to strong data and computational platforms and services to accelerate scientific discovery and scholarship and advance Stanford's research mission.
Ruth has worked to understand and address the current and emerging needs for faculty and researchers across the continuum of cyberinfrastructure: data, storage, computation, networking and consultation services to accelerate research at Stanford. Under Ruth’s leadership, the Stanford Research Computing Facility located on the SLAC campus launched in 2013. In 2023, a new building opened (SRCF2), significantly expanding the facility’s hosting capabilities. Planning for SRCF3 is already underway.
In addition to leading Stanford's Research Computing program for the last 12 years, Ruth has been an active and influential figure in national discussions around high-performance computing. Ruth co-chairs the National Science Foundation's Advisory Committee on Cyberinfrastructure, and participates in the leadership team for the annual Practice & Experience in Advanced Research Computing (PEARC) conference series. Ruth was also co-sponsor of Stanford’s Women in Technology program.
Nan McKenna, who is currently a senior director in Stanford Research Computing, will serve as Interim Executive Director effective November 1. Later this fall, we will share more details regarding a national search for a permanent chief technology officer for Stanford Research Computing.
Ruth’s last day at Stanford will be November 1, and she will continue to be active until her departure to Yale.
Please join us in congratulating Ruth on her new role. We are very grateful for her strong leadership of Stanford Research Computing, and wish her every success as she embarks upon this next chapter of her career.
