“I am currently interning as a Project Manager/Data Analyst at Stanford, where I have the exciting opportunity to collaborate with a dynamic team at Digital Solutions. “During my internship at Stanford with Student Tech Services, I have the chance to see how IT Help Desks function in real time. I tackle support tickets from students and work through a range of tech issues. Collaborating with UIT Stanford and other departments is a valuable experience. I learn a lot from Brandon Paris, one of the great managers on the team, who offers helpful insights along the way. A highlight for me is helping students find resolutions to their problems, which is incredibly rewarding. Overall, my time here has been both enjoyable and enriching, boosting my professional skills and deepening my appreciation for the tech industry.”

“Being at Stanford University is a dream. The campus is gorgeous and it is just such a great place to be. Interning at the School of Medicine, I get to support some great folks who are doing incredible work/research. It is such a great feeling being a part of something greater and helping folks have all their tech needs met, making their hard work slightly easier. I am so grateful for this opportunity and it is extremely rewarding. I am excited to meet more people and learn as much as I can while here! Thank you to both Stanford and Year Up for supporting me all the way!”

For the sixth year in a row, the Year Up Internship Program and Stanford IT community is hosting Year Up interns and providing them with first-hand experience in the workforce. In July, we welcomed 21 new interns!

Year Up United

Year Up has rebranded to Year Up United (YUU), a national organization that aims to close the opportunity divide by giving diverse populations the education and experience needed to start their careers. Students spend six months learning and training for the track of their choice: help desk/desktop support, data analytics, project management support or application development. They are then placed in internships across many organizations, including Stanford, where they spend another six months gaining work experience.

Students are offered support and guidance throughout their internships on how to plan their next steps. By the end of their year-long program, these young adults are qualified and prepared to enter the Stanford and Bay Area workforce.

“More hiring managers are catching on that we have talented young people interning here. I had three reach out during the last cohort for openings on their teams." said Hope Johnson, Year Up partnership lead. “That's what we want! Internships that turn into ongoing opportunities.”

Two new units are sponsoring interns in this cohort: School of Engineering’s Bioengineering  group, and the School of Medicine’s Postdoc Affairs and Comparative Medicine groups. These units join eight returning sponsoring organizations: the Graduate School of Business; Land, Buildings and Real Estate; Learning Technologies and Spaces; Office of Development/External Relations; Residential and Dining Enterprises; SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory; Stanford University Libraries; and University IT.

“In partnership with the CIO Council, the Year Up United internship program provides a unique opportunity to 'walk the talk' in recruiting IT talent that reflects the diversity of our Bay Area community,” said Steve Gallagher, Chief Information Officer at Stanford and executive sponsor for the Year Up Internship program at Stanford. “I’m delighted to see this program continue to grow and prosper across Stanford as part of our IDEAL IT program.”
