WIT+ Connect: A Look at Career Development and Advancement for Women in Technology at Stanford

On Wednesday, April 19, WIT+ hosted “WIT+ Connect: A Look at Career Development and Advancement for Women in Technology at Stanford.” This event featured Trina Glidden, Tina Del Cont and Michelle Reade, members of the WIT+ Data Analysis Committee which was recently promoted to an IDEAL IT-wide committee. Based on interviews they conducted with a group of women in technology roles at Stanford, they presented data and insights on their career development

These interviews included many questions regarding the experience of women in technology roles at Stanford and steps they may or may not have been able to take to advance their careers.

During this event, the committee members discussed findings from the Women in the Workplace study conducted by LeanIn.org and McKinsey & Company, followed by a facilitated Q&A and inspiring conversation on how we can continue to support and advance women in technology.

Advice for women working at Stanford

The committee members shared valuable advice for women navigating the workplace:

  • “Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want. The worst that can happen is that the person will say no and even then you at least know where you stand.” - Bobbi Woody-Mistriel, SLAC
  • “Have regular conversations with your manager about growth opportunities and stretch assignments. Volunteer your time to mentor new staff.” - Paarth Shukla, LBRE
  • “Talk to everyone, find connections and common ground. Explore EDP opportunities (even just go & sees).” - Sarah Wilson, UIT
