Join us for the first event in a new series entitled "Conversations with Extraordinary Leaders." This event will moderated by Stanford CIO Steve Gallagher, and feature Harvard University Vice President and CIO Anne Margulies and Duke University Vice President and CIO Tracy Futhey.
Anne Margulies
Vice President and University Chief Information Officer, Harvard University
Anne Margulies is Vice President and University Chief Information Officer at Harvard and is responsible for information technology strategy, policies, and services that support the University’s mission of teaching, learning, and research. Anne leads Harvard University Information Technology (HUIT), which provides IT services to over 50,000 educators, students, and staff.
Before returning to Harvard—she had been Assistant Provost and Executive Director for Information Systems in the late 1990s—Anne was Assistant Secretary for Information Technology and CIO for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In this capacity she developed and implemented a statewide strategic plan for IT and oversaw consolidation of a vast patchwork of agency IT organizations, operations, data centers, and networks into a coherent statewide structure. Prior to her service with the Commonwealth, Anne was founding Executive Director of MIT OpenCourseWare, MIT’s internationally acclaimed initiative to publish the teaching materials for their entire curriculum openly and freely over the Internet.
In 2019 Anne was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Engineering and Informatics from the Universitat Politècnica de València, and in 2015 was selected as the Boston CIO Leader of the Year and inducted into the CIO Hall of Fame.
Tracy Futhey
Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Duke University
Since 2002, Tracy Futhey has presided over Duke's information technology endeavors and led the Office of Information Technology. She is a leader in using commercial technologies to create and disseminate digital course materials, including collaboration with industry partners in the development of education-related services such as iTunesU and the use of technology to enable distant collaboration.
Under Futhey's leadership, Duke's IT capabilities now extend to a global network, including delivery of technology services to Duke Kunshan University and other international programs and sites.
Futhey serves on various industry advisory councils for Fortune 100 technology companies and has been awarded National Science Foundation grants supporting cyber-infrastructure deployment and the adoption of software-defined networks.
Before Duke, Futhey spent 17 years at Carnegie Mellon University, where she rose to the position of chief information officer and oversaw projects in mobile and location-based computing. She holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics with a computer science concentration and a master's degree in industrial administration, both from Carnegie Mellon.
Through a facilitated discussion and Q&A, these extraordinary leaders will share their career journeys, lessons learned along the way, and what traits they've found to be most important in their leadership approach.
The all-virtual event is open to the IT communities at Duke, Harvard and Stanford, is limited to 1,000 registrants, and will include opportunities for participants to ask questions of these leaders. Please register using the form below.
This event is sponsored by Stanford Women in Technology, Harvard Women in Tech + Allies, and Duke Diversify IT.
