Android Enterprise Migration Starting Sept. 19

This month, University IT will email faculty and staff using Stanford-affiliated Android devices enrolled in the Android Device Administrator management to let them know they will receive a prompt to migrate their device to Android Enterprise.

Starting Sept. 19, a message will be pushed from the Hub app to prompt individuals to initiate migration and complete the migration. You can preview the steps in these instructions on how to migrate to Android Enterprise.

What will change

Google is phasing out the Android Device Administrator — the legacy form of Android device management — to provide a more secure and flexible approach to device management.

After the migration, the following significant changes will directly impact how staff and faculty access applications for work purposes.

  • Work profile: Work and personal apps will be in separate profiles with the option to silence work-related apps. Work profiles will have a briefcase icon.
  • Stanford email: Android’s default mail app is incompatible with the Android Enterprise work profile. Staff must use the Microsoft Outlook mobile app or Stanford webmail to access Stanford email.
  • Box for EMM: Staff currently using the Box for Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) app to access Medicine Box will need to switch to the Box app found in the Work Profile Play Store.

How to support your Android users
