Fourth Annual Campus IT Plan Continues to Capture Forward-Looking IT Strategies

Now in its fourth year, the 2023 Campus IT Plan demonstrates Stanford’s commitment to strategize, prioritize and align its technology efforts. Common themes across the 24 participating schools and units include Stanford’s Renew-Extend-Replace (RER) framework and Stanford’s Long-Range Vision, which influence the work of the IT community. The visions, strategies, and roadmaps laid out in the Campus IT Plan strive to take us where we want to be in each of the 10 strategic areas

Campus IT highlights

This year’s plan captures 120 forward-looking IT strategies and more than 270 technology efforts informed by trends and external forces that shape how we deliver technology. The following are just a few highlights from the plan that impact staff, faculty and students across Stanford:

  • Research Computing: supporting Stanford’s research mission by furthering our high-performance computing capabilities and meeting the ever-increasing demand for shared resources and facilities, such as the SRCF-2 facility opening in 2023.
  • Data Management and Reporting: building a strategic data management framework of policies, capabilities, infrastructure, and governance to enable us to manage Stanford’s data assets more effectively.
  • Student Experience: supporting our students, instructors, advisors, and staff by implementing wide-reaching improvements to student systems as well as innovative approaches to supporting our academic mission through mobile applications, cross-platform online learning, and virtual learning.
  • Renew-Extend-Replace: a 10-year roadmap to leverage and extend current investments in enterprise systems and infrastructure, and to respond to end-of-life announcements by replacing Stanford’s core human resources, enterprise learning management, student, and finance platforms.
  • Talent Development: supporting our IT community through evolving work arrangements, changing expectations, and professional opportunities that focus on developing and retaining the best talent, while building a diverse and inclusive workplace.

Historically, the Campus IT Plan was revisited and updated annually. The CIO Council aims to shorten the update cycle to include minor edits more often. This will ensure priorities and strategies are regularly being reviewed and aligned so Stanford can continue to be at the forefront of technology.

Campus IT Plan Summits

Along with the plan, UIT hosts the Campus IT Plan Summit, which focuses on one strategic area. In the last year, two summits, focusing on administrative and research data, brought the IT community together. These summits foster knowledge sharing and networking across IT at Stanford. Stay tuned for information about this year’s summit.
