STLP Spotlight: Group Presentation Leads to IT Goal Visibility

LLMs in Action

  1. Go to llm.stanford.edu.
  2. In the prompt, type a question such as “What are some common goals between Stanford UIT and Stanford H&S?”
  3. Click “Submit.”
  4. A response highlighting common goals will populate.

During the Stanford Technology Leadership Program (STLP), cohort participants research specific topics and challenges faced by the IT community at Stanford.

Previous topics include:

  • Enhancing Inclusion and Belonging
  • Managing Workload
  • Communicating Your Value

This year, one STLP group focused on the challenges of navigating communication across Stanford, in particular on how organizational IT goals are shared throughout the university.

The project

“We wanted to address the lack of visibility of organizational IT goals across the university,” said Laurie Miller, technical manager at UIT. “It can seem like there is no way of knowing if other units have the same objectives or are duplicating efforts.”

The group aimed to develop a solution to keep the campus community informed about IT objectives and streamline the process of locating them.

After attending an AI Prompt course, Laurie was introduced to llm.stanford.edu, a website that leverages Google large learning models to summarize content from Stanford webpages. The website was created by Paul Nuyujukian, assistant professor of bioengineering and of neurosurgery, and, by courtesy, electrical engineering.

“If you’re trying to find a particular organization’s goals on their website, you might have to read through lots of content and visit multiple webpages,” said Miller. “Professor Nuyujukian’s website indexes and summarizes content on multiple Stanford webpages and is accessible to the Stanford community.”

The team integrated the Campus IT Plan domain into the llm.stanford.edu system, making it easier for our campus partners to find and understand the university's IT strategies.

Providing opportunities for effective collaboration

STLP is a program designed to support the individual growth of current or aspiring IT leaders and develop an IT community at Stanford that can work more effectively across organizations to deliver the information technology our university needs to achieve its mission. Through projects and modules, STLP cohorts can leverage their differing perspectives to find solutions to challenges across the community.
