IT Career Pathways Short Term Development Assignment

Overview: We are building a small team who will design, develop, and implement a new  IT Connect + Grow initiative called IT Career Pathways. 

The vision for IT Career Pathways is to help staff:

  • Explore different roles across the IT community
  • Learn about skills, training, and experiences needed for both technical and management career paths
  • Connect with people currently in those roles
  • Learn strategies for mobilizing their career

We’re offering a Short Term Development Assignment for those interested in helping plan and shape the IT Career Pathways initiative. There are three tracks for this assignment, which call upon different responsibilities and skillsets. Learning Outcomes: This assignment provides a unique opportunity to contribute to the design and launch of a high-visibility program, collaborate and network  with colleagues across units, and build new skills in program design and development, communications, and event planning.

Duration: Approximately 8 months (February - October ), 10-15% time (approximately 4-6 hours per week)

Location: Any (remote, hybrid, or onsite)

 

Short Term Development Assignment Tracks:

1) IT Career Pathways Resource Curator (Research + Content Focus)

Purpose: Support the development of the IT Career Pathways resource library by mapping career trajectories and curating supporting materials.

Responsibilities:

  • Research and outline the skills, competencies, and training requirements tied to specific IT roles.
  • Interview staff to capture insights on career paths and day-to-day realities of different roles.
  • Draft content for the Career Pathways  resource library (role profiles, pathways, and skills).
  • Collaborate with program managers to package resources into a user-friendly online library, which will live within the IT Connect + Grow web site

Deliverables: A foundational set of role profiles and resources for the IT Career Pathways resource library.

Requirements to Apply: 

  • Having knowledge of a broad range of IT roles would be helpful but not required.
  • Some comms experience and/or proficiency in written communications would be helpful, but not required.

     

2) IT Career Pathways Event Planner (Event + Engagement Focus)

Purpose: Support planning and execution of the three IT Career Pathways events.

Responsibilities: 

  • Partner with the planning team to shape event format and session design.
  • Identify and outreach to  speakers/presenters to feature diverse IT roles.
  • Manage event logistics (communications, scheduling, tech support, etc.).
  • Gather post-event feedback and capture lessons learned for future events.

Deliverables: Three events in 2026 that engage staff across IT and build awareness of IT career pathways.

Requirements to Apply: 

  • Event planning experience is welcomed but not required.

     

3) Career Success Stories Producer (Storytelling Focus)

Purpose: Elevate IT staff voices by collecting and sharing inspiring Career Stories as part of the IT Career Pathways initiative.

Responsibilities: 

  • Interview staff about their career journeys within Stanford IT.
  • Write and/or edit Career Stories. See example of a Career Story here.
  • Career Stories will be published on the IT Community website, Slack channels, and possibly the IT Community newsletter. 

Deliverables: A compelling set of Career Success Stories that highlight real career pathways and inspire colleagues to explore their own growth.

Requirements to Apply: 

  • Some comms experience and/or proficiency in written communications is required.
