Content is exploding in the video domain.
The need is great and diverse but there are constraints, money and time mostly, to training. It needs to be available 24x7 and on any device.
The resources are limited.
Case Study: 3 year old video lecture from Stanford where the instructor is basically recorded in documentary fashion which is not the best way to deliver a video sourced class.
Case Study: YouTube videos
presenter knows her audience
uses good editing technique
in her blog format she allows for feedback to improve her videos
Multi-sensory input is the basis of learning, multimodal and works best when it involves 3 senses.
Learn better- Lynda want to enhance not replace other modes of learning.
Info needs to be searchable and in bite sizes
The audio creates an emotional connection that can seem very personal (as if the presenter was speaking directly to the listener)
Transcripts of the lecture are very useful
Video encourages repeat content viewing
Testing is not a major component, so no stress in the learning process
Keeps the form factor easy, no wonky video player controls, use the standard icons.
Choice, Lynda tries to provide content on many levels
Time and Location are flexible
Synchronous vs Asynchronous? Asynchronous supports choice and flexibility.
Engagement, attention span is limited... no more than 10 minutes but 4-7 minutes is more friendly with users. Based on user response to how long a video is... 60 minute videos are dropped very quickly.
Learning stimulates endorphin release in the brain and when learning is shared there is a second stimulation of endorphin release in the sharer.
Reviewed our ecorner.stanford.edu and likes many features of the design: access controls, outline of the presentation, short video snippets, comment section.
