Department Level Network File Storage

Proposed by Phil Farrell

Where will the conversation continue?
There is a need for sharing information - yes! mailing list. New IT Storage Manager might own the ongoing collaboration here.
Notes

**----------------------------------------------**
Issues: Data protection, cost, multi-protocol access (dropbox), policies/procedures, performance, compliance (DR, security, auditing), reliability (incl network connectivity), searchability/navigability, access control, provisioning.
Solutions (SaaS storage & build yourself):
> Network bandwidth usually not the issue.
> Build yourself allows peace of mind, possible network performance advantage, backup/archive options.
> NFS/CiFS to ITS low-cost storage and archival services is working for some - incl. H&S ... .10/GB works well for active storage, $200/TB/Year archival is good for backups, minimally accessed files.
> Box.Net agreement with Internet2 for cloud storage with universities as an option? Link no longer available
> Your own system is best for large research data.
(needs for better ideas as these come into the Stanford environment)
> ITS offerings at Stanford: https://itservices.stanford.edu/service/storage
> SecureAFS is an option at low levels of data.. Secure is helpful, web interface is useful.
Other Issues:
> Appropriateness versus data security policies.
> Inviting non-SUNet access.
