There are certs, masters programs, are they worth it?
TEchnical Certifications, Foster trust, collaboration. Should we bring folks in, or do home grown. 360 degree formalized. Tracking technical professionals. What tools are folks using to tack professionals.
University Medical Technology. CERTS, Academic Masters. What are the pros and cons of keeping them up. What’s the benefit of keeping them up?
Continuing your professional growth. To move beyond that I am unsure what path to take. Academic degrees make a huge difference.
Stephen raised the value of online degree vs. traditional on-premise degree.
Beyond Moocs
New version of mood, called class x. You can review content retrospectively.
There is more to undergraduate experience that classes. online experience doesn’t give you the full experience. There is structure and community in online learning and on premise education.
University is moving away from coursework’s. Stanford is moving towards to Canvas.
Online degrees from Stanford are considered more valuable.
Tech Certs
Are these important? one person: Yes, supplements your degree and enhances your resume. Not required but helpful in making a hiring decision in certain areas such as computer networking.
In IT, you can come here with a high school diploma to move on. That right? Yes, certs are not required but helpful to advance. If you have a technician who just sits there and does noting, there may be minimal growth.
Worth & Return on Investment
Early on in my career, it helped me get started.
My Masters Degree has been vital in open doors.
Certs do make a difference, but not a major difference.
Indivuals need to make a personal argument.
Traditional academic degrees help more for advancement.
Online Academic Masters
IT Staff get $5250 benefit for online degree. STRP — not for kids. Only for degree granting programs.
At Berkeley access to free Extension Classes
You can audit classes.
JC’s, such as foothill and deanza, offer good hands-on classes. If you need portfolio work , this is a good place to get it, and for cheap.
Which programs are good? Arizona State and Penn State. Some of those online classes force you to visit in person.
Where can you find information? Distance Education Accreditation groups provide information. For laws schools, california allows online laws schools. For moods, there is courser, udemy, udacity, etc. Half the courses out there are offered by bonus institutions.
Community
Lot of silos on campus
Communities of Practice, Mailman lists.
Would be nice that there is one general website, list the groups, topics.
Tech Commons is not heavily used.
We are so silted and decentralized. Takes a long time to learn about who does what.
We have CAP.
Silos due to different funding, business needs. A lot of duplication. We have three email systems. Wealthy projects even hire their own staff, teams. Can’t stop professors from buying their
