The next big thing

Proposed by Stephen Wong

Notes

So what do we see as trends happening at the University?
used to be large hardware presence - now people are not even budgeting for it - movement to the cloud.
are we scared that the IT staff footprint will shrink because of movement to the cloud? Retooling skills,
How are you staying ahead?
community
industry trends
ITS Emerging Technologies group
client requirements

how can we continue to be valuable to the school?
focus on the customization and school-specific solutions, while outsourcing thinks like help desk.
groups are starting to move services centrally, such as SWS so they can focus on the local content and not spend time on supporting the server and developing web

this all represents a huge shift in how money is budgeted and spent
groups are ready to start giving up control and work on newer things
How do we predict the "next big thing" - how do you stay on top? What are you doing in your groups?
move to Canvas
conducting surveys, going to conferences,
groups are starting to invest in staff assets that are "tech gurus"
SalesForce seems to be an evolving trend
historical changes like the economic downturn, as well as community building through ITLP, STLP, UnConference start to surface opportunities to consolidate, partner, centralize, etc.
need a clearing house for skills, projects, etc.  - a channel for people to come together.
