Where should we go next with IDEAL IT, which is our community-based, community-led system of DEIB programs for Stanford IT. the goal for this conversation is creative exploration.

- Introductions were done around the room and in Zoom
- Showed IDEAL IT Flower model graphic and went over the pillars within IDEAL II
- Discussion topic:
- Should we add or subtract or condense the number of pillars? What could/should the overall program look like?
- How is the Duke program structured vis-a-vis IDEAL IT? -
- If we had one group, maybe we wouldn't have as many events and we could have a more focused approach.
- Think it's a great idea to continue with the current number of pillars instead of combining, but we need support (from above and from community)
- Dr. Shirley Everett uses the term "Diversity Excellence"
- What do each of the programs do? Events, other things?
- Neurodiversity: education (Lunch-n-Learn, internship and programs
- Year Up: internship program, educational programming
- WIT+ and POC-IT: put on a lot of events as affinity groups
- Accessible IT: education through Lunch-n-Learns, bring the community together
- Foundations: training classes
- Where does the Program Support team spend most of its time? Answer: "That's a really good question that we need to think more about."
- How does IT Community Connect work vis-a-vis IDEAL IT: overlap? difference? ITCC is more about taking advantage of the Leadership Program alumni while IDEAL IT is focused more around improving diversity within the IT Community
- Like the current structure as it's easy to find the program that's affiliated with one's interests. Duke's system is at a disadvantage by grouping everything together as a "spaghetti" - unclear how to buy in or contribute. Redesign logo to work for both those who are interested in community and those who are interested in compliance
- Arguments can be made either way. Can there be a third approach that is "BOTH, AND". Similar events that cross IDEAL IT vs pillar-specific focuses.
- Pivot to more of a visual media perspective (create video of people sharing personal experiences of how they've been involved)
- Need to think creatively about how to move forward
- Instead of creating new groups, incorporate them into events put on by current groups (POC-IT's event around pronouns)
- How is the Duke program structured vis-a-vis IDEAL IT? -
- Is there a possibility for something less high-stakes and structured and more like topic-based or reading groups/book clubs, etc? Second to forming a book club.
- How much structure does a book club need? WIT+ did something around articles where people would come together and discuss (led by Coleen Cuddy)
- Semi-formal groups like meetup.com (clarification around all types of diversity for the book club), anything where anyone other than the host beens to prepare is a little too high stakes; but as a general idea, they're a great way to connect people - there are certain formats where that can work and be very productive
- At the GSB there is a volunteer group called "The Roundtable". Started with a book/movie club where people could do one or both in preparation and then the discussion was about similarities/differences between the two as a lower barrier to entry.
- The machinery behind putting on those events - maybe there's a way to disengage that level of formality and encourage informal kinds of events.
- Should we add or subtract or condense the number of pillars? What could/should the overall program look like?
- NEXT STEPS:
- IDEAL IT will be presenting to IDEAL Staff Advisory group in January (highlighting POC-IT)
- Yearly Report to the CIO Council in February or March depending on their schedule

- CIOC report will inform future directions for IDEAL IT
