Stanford Device Registration App Nears Launch

Say goodbye to juggling multiple standalone apps. The Stanford Device Registration app merges several of our go-to tools into a single, user-friendly interface — greatly simplifying how we bring Mac, Windows, and Linux devices into compliance at Stanford.

Look for an announcement at the end of August to confirm the new app’s arrival.

Single solution streamlines the workflow

Stanford Device Registration is replacing Stanford Whole Disk Encryption (SWDE), Device Enrollment, and the Stanford Network Registration Tool (SNRT) with an elegant and modern all-in-one solution. For those who want a read-only agent for encryption, it will also provide the option to install Very Lightweight Reporting Engine (VLRE), keeping the core code for VLRE unchanged from what it is today.

Moreover, Stanford Device Registration will offer functionality specifically for IT professionals, including a feature to bypass client authentication. More details will be published on the service page in the coming weeks.

Update your bookmarks

The launch of the new app will also improve how you find information. Content and downloads for the standalone SWDE, Device Enrollment, and SNRT services will be integrated into a single, comprehensive service page at device-registration.stanford.edu.

The existing legacy standalone service pages will be archived after Stanford Device Registration goes live. Should you inadvertently land on a legacy standalone service page, you’ll find a link to navigate you to the new information on the updated service page.

Compliance with minimal effort

By gathering information about a device and the client’s affiliation, the Stanford Device Registration app enables you to set up new devices or ensure compliance for existing ones in the fewest steps possible. The university requirements for a specific affiliation and the type of data an individual will access determine the tailored process, so each device gets precisely the level of protection required for a designated role.

The development of the app and its refreshed approach to improving the client experience was driven in response to feedback in our 2020 IT Client Satisfaction Survey.

Next steps

As we countdown to go live, be sure to:

  • Update your bookmarks to reflect the new webpage device-registration.stanford.edu.
  • Review any department or client-specific information and look for links that need updating.
  • Take inventory of any SWDE, SNRT, and Device Enrollment installers you may have saved to an external drive or file share.
  • Spread awareness about the transition across your team.

If you have feedback or questions, join the conversation in Slack via the #eed-public channel or submit a Help request.
