New IDEAL IT Learning Programs Offer Support, Resources, and Community Dialogue

This year, IDEAL IT introduced two new learning programs for the IT Community: #IamRemarkable and Allyship at Work.

The programs are designed to support your individual learning journey and grow our collective culture of diversity, inclusion, and belonging in the IT Community at Stanford.

About #IamRemarkable

Many of us struggle when it comes to talking about our accomplishments. Cultural and gender modesty norms, as well as impostor syndrome, can prevent anyone from acknowledging their remarkable attributes and expressing their achievements.

#IamRemarkable is an experiential workshop that empowers participants to celebrate their achievements in the workplace and beyond. Part of a global Google initiative and led by Stanford facilitators, this interactive session offers group discussions and exercises to develop the confidence and skills to promote yourself effectively.

In addition to the individual benefits, the #IamRemarkable workshop supports the IT Community collectively by:

  • driving diversity benefits and allyship by supporting underrepresented groups in getting their voices heard
  • improving motivation and self-confidence by encouraging employees to express their achievements
  • strengthening team cohesion and inclusion by building trust and improving the quality of communication

After each workshop, #IamRemarkable alumni are invited to participate in a Slack community to continue learning together. On a recent Remarkable Wednesday, one participant shared an accomplishment they are particularly proud of: “I am remarkable for having the uncomfortable conversation of advocating for myself and proactively defining my worth. While the conversation was difficult (for both sides), I stayed strong! I pushed the conversation forward to articulate what I believe I bring to the table that is beyond “the traditional role in the market.”

#IamRemarkable is offered once a month and rotates between in-person workshops on historic campus and Stanford Redwood City, as well as Zoom-only workshops.

About Allyship at Work

Allyship at Work is an educational training program developed by Lean In that empowers participants to take meaningful actions as allies and to build an inclusive workplace culture.

Led by Stanford IT facilitators, Allyship at Work teaches participants to recognize their privilege and power to create change through research-backed steps they can take to show up as allies. The program includes individual activities, real-life stories, group discussions, and videos to help participants develop a shared understanding of allyship and prepare to take action in ways that center impact and avoid pitfalls like performative allyship or “savior mentality.”

A recent participant noted, “I liked the way that each area of allyship was broken down with specific examples and statistics. I feel like these areas are usually just mentioned in passing, and it was nice to give each one context because all of the small things add up!”

Another participant continued, “I appreciated the consolidated lists of practical actions that I can take to be a better ally at work. Understanding ways of making specific workplace things more equitable for everyone was very helpful.”

Allyship at Work is offered quarterly on Zoom. Registration is open now for the Spring workshop series.

Spread the Word

You are encouraged to register for the learning programs and spread the word to your staff and colleagues. Both programs aim to help us become better, more intentional allies to ourselves and others so that we can create a more inclusive community within Stanford IT.
