With the help of local IT support teams, UIT recently completed a project that migrated 20,000+ iOS devices to a new mobile device management software called Jamf.

When a team develops innovative custom applications and sustainable best practices that smoothly transition tens of thousands of devices to new management software, it’s a story worth sharing.

That’s why Jamf invited members of Stanford University IT's (UIT) Endpoint Engineering and Development (EED) team on stage during the Jamf Nation User Conference (JNUC) 2022, held on Sept. 28 and 29 in San Diego, CA.

Joining forces to present a live session entitled The Stanford Jamf Experience - A Device Migration Retrospective were:

  • Jeff Barkow, EED manager
  • Trina Glidden, UIT project manager
  • Forrester Terry, EED software developer lead
  • Sam Zamvil, EED systems engineer

The group highlighted their experiences guiding the Jamf iOS Migration project, an initiative focused on changing the software tool used to manage iOS devices at Stanford.

What did the effort entail? With the support of local IT teams, the project transitioned mobile device management for more than 20,000 iOS devices from Workspace One to Jamf — in less than eight months. The team is also taking on a related project for macOS that is currently underway and has already enrolled more than 24,000 devices.

The session also spotlighted the integrations and development processes required to bring Jamf to Stanford, such as:

  • Site Mapper, a tool that uses organizational attributes to determine what site a device should belong to so distributed administrators can more easily manage their devices.
  • Cardinal Connector, a Jamf Automation and Webhook Assistant that feeds Stanford's device compliance database for a unified view of all device types at the university.

After the event, Jeff said he was thrilled with his team’s presentations, adding: “The response from the Jamf Nation community was overwhelmingly positive. We received questions from organizations working on similar projects or those facing equivalent migrations.”
